As a class we continued to work on solving word problems using subtraction and addition.
Students were given the problem; There are nine people on a train at the next stop four more get on, how many people are on the train. Students couldn't simply just give the answer but had to work on giving a addition sentence. Ex 9 + 4 = 13 students then had to also show their work of how they got this answer (by drawing objects). Once this was solved students were then told at the next stop two people get off the train.
Students in grade 1 - practised showing more than and less than using subtraction and addition sentences.
Students in grade 2 - practised solving word equations pertaining to addition and subtraction.

Students in grade two:
Continued to work on adding detail to sentences. We did a couple more as a class; students first had to find and label the noun and verb in the sentence. Then they had to add at least one adjective to describe the noun. Then they needed to pick who, what, where, when, why to add to the sentence, and then repeat. For example:
The pumpkin grew. noun pumpkin, verb grew.
The orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb).
The orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb) in the field. (where)
In the fall (when) the orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb) in the field. (where)
