Dec 14

Wednesday is our Christmas concert - students are expected to attend both the afternoon and night performance as this is part of their art mark. Also not coming for the night performance could throw off our show as every student has a part. 
- Students are asked to wear red/green shirt with blue or black jeans or a Christmas dress 
- For the night performance students are to be dropped off in the classroom at 6:30pm, once you drop them off you may head to the auditorium to get your seat for the performance. Once the concert is finished you may collect your student from the classroom.
- There will be a bake sale during the day at the night of the performance 
- Students will be given their Christmas gift from me the night of the concert - please inform me if this is something you do not celebrate. 

Thursday
- There will be a bake sale this day 
- Students are asked to come to school dressed in Christmas spirit colours 
- Jan. lunch orders are due 
- Scientists in school permission form and payment due 
- Students are asked to clear out their cubbies for the break they may leave their gym and dress shoes but bring everything else home 

If you haven't paid already after-school care fees were due yesterday. 

No School Friday! The is a P.D Day camp being offered to students on Friday, December 18th, Monday, January 4th and Tuesday January 5th.  A flyer went home regarding these camps last week. 

Registration packages are going home today with all students.  Please be aware that packages are due back to the school on February 11th after this date spots are open to the public for registration and will fill up fast as we already have a wait list!!!


Today we spent the morning in dress rehearsal for the Christmas concert. We watched everyone's performances and the concert is going to be a good one!

We worked on a little Christmas writing activity about what we would do on a visit to the North Pole. Students practiced writing an introduction sentence, First, Next, Then, Finally and a concluding sentence. 

In math we continued to work on addition and subtraction stories and word problems. 

For UOI we finished up our structures presentations.

Year Ahead Day!!

Thank you SK's for a wonderful day today, we had a great time and everyone was so well behaved!

We started our day with French:

Next we did calendar and I got to hear everyone's beautiful singing voices, once that was done we read a story called Justin and the Bully. We practiced our reading comprehension, re-tell, and problem solving skills by answering different questions and making predictions during and after the reading:


Afterwards we had a fun time in gym and art with Ms. Kerr:

December 9th

Calendar: the special helper puts up the date, adds to our weather graph, and counts days at school.

Math: 
Students in grade 1 - we continued discussing addition and subtraction. We discussed what the meaning of each was. We talked about different ways of adding and ways of subtracting. Students then practised some of these strategies in their math books. They created and solved subtraction stories using different numbers/pictures/words. 

Students in grade 2 we continued discussing discussing addition and subtraction. We discussed what the meaning of each was. We talked about different ways of adding and ways of subtracting. Students then practised some of these strategies in their math books.
We looked at borrowing and carrying over/re grouping and how these methods worked, we also looked at doubt digit addition and subtraction. Students solved addition problems with grouping by 10's and 20's.

Free Time:

Unit of inquiry:

We continued our new UOI on Structures. As a class we discussed definitions of certain words we will be using throughout the unit. We began to make a glossary of words that we will need throughout the unit.
We wrote the definitions for:
Structure
Strength
Stability
Force.

Next we looked at different materials and put them to the test by stacking toonies to see how much weight they could support.

First we made a prediction of which object would hold the most amount of weight and which would hold the least. Then we tested the card board and were able to stack 13 toonies on before the cardboard collapsed. Next we tested paper and we were only able to place one toonie on before it collapsed.  Then we tried stir sticks (6 taped together) Lastly we tried plastic straws which held 32 Toonies!!!


Language:
Students in grade one: 
worked on a special winter writing activity. Students were told to pretend they were trapped in a snow globe! They had to write a 4-5 sentence paragraph about what they would do. Students were reminded to make sure they started with an introduction sentence and a concluding sentence. They needed to make sure they had sentence starters, capitals, periods, and capitals for the word I.

Students in grade two:
worked in their Ontario Writing books on writing an explanation of a recipe. They were told to pick their favourite snack/food and plan out the receipe. Students had to write the title of the recipe, then the materials needed, then the tools needed, and then step by step directions for how to make it.

We also took time today to practice our Christmas concert, please ensure you are practicing speaking loudly and clearly at home. Some students still do not know their part or are whispering it.

Students in grade one: Practised putting their new learned spelling words into use, they used them to fill in sentences based on their meaning, words that begin with and end with the same sounds, opposites and rhyming.

Students in grade two: Practised  putting their new learned spelling words into use by filling in a crossword with clues, writing a short blurb using some of the words and using the word meanings to fill in the blanks.

Journal: 
students were required to write an explanation piece. They worked on How to make a sandwich. Students gave me step by step directions using the sentence starters of

Daily Five:
We began a christmas writing activity. Students were required to think of nouns, adjectives, and verbs that go with the word Rudolph. Students will be putting these together in a template to make a poem. 



We also took time today to practice our Christmas concert, please ensure you are practicing speaking loudly and clearly at home. Some students still do not know their part or are whispering it.

December 3rd

Students in grade 1 - we continued discussing addition and subtraction. We discussed what the meaning of each was. We talked about different ways of adding and ways of subtracting. Students then practised some of these strategies in their math books. They wrote addition stories using different numbers. 

Students in grade 2 began discussing addition and subtraction. We discussed what the meaning of each was. We talked about different ways of adding and ways of subtracting. Students then practised some of these strategies in their math books.
We looked at borrowing and carrying over/re grouping and how these methods worked, we also looked at doubt digit addition and subtraction. Students completed two practice worksheets for addition and subtraction. This was brought home as homework if not finished.

We worked on a worksheet that helped us to sort objects by their materials, this also helped us to recognize different materials. 

Language:
Students in grade 1 - Worked on writing an explanation piece. Students were required to write step by step directions using the words:

Then you 
Finally you

to start their sentences. Students had to write about instructions to play the game 'I Spy.'

Students in grade 2 -  worked in the Ontario Writing books working on an explanation piece of instructions as well. Students worked on a rough draft of instructions on how to play a game of their choice. Students were required to give sentences:

Next you
Then you
Next you
Finally you

tomorrow they will complete the good copy.

Novel study 
we read the last chapter of 'Chocolate Fever,' today! students were required to write a journal describing their favourite parts of the novel. Students were asked to write an introduction sentence. Two supporting sentences and a concluding sentence. (We discussed how our concluding sentence should start with finally or Lastly) 
Students were reminded to use capitals at the beginning of their sentences and for proper nouns. They were reminded to use proper punctuation at the end of their sentences and that they could not start their sentence with the word 'AND.'

Material Sorting Game

We then looked at a tent and discussed the three definitions

object - the tent
materials - mesh/nylon/string/metal
Structure - poles to pop up the tent

We then looked at the structure of a house and car and discussed different materials used to build these objects.

Language:
Students in grade 1 - Completed the second writing task of the year for the Ontario Writing Assessment.(OWA) This is a pre-assessment to gauge the students' prior knowledge on the writing task. Students worked on writing an Explanation, they were told they woke up yesterday morning, you looked out the window, you saw more snow than you ever seen before! Write a journal re-tell of what you did on your snowy day. 

Students in grade 2 -  Completed the second writing task of the year for the Ontario Writing Assessment.(OWA) This is a pre-assessment to gauge the students' prior knowledge on the writing task. Students are working on writing an explanation. Students were told they just had invented a super robot. Write an explanation of how your new invention works. Describe the robot, what does it do, and how does it work.

students completed a work sheet on telling what they know about Henry Green and how he got Chocolate fever
