Unit of inquiry:

We continued our new UOI on Structures. As a class we discussed definitions of certain words we will be using throughout the unit. We began to make a glossary of words that we will need throughout the unit.
We wrote the definitions for:
Structure
Strength
Stability
Force.

Next we looked at different materials and put them to the test by stacking toonies to see how much weight they could support.

First we made a prediction of which object would hold the most amount of weight and which would hold the least. Then we tested the card board and were able to stack 13 toonies on before the cardboard collapsed. Next we tested paper and we were only able to place one toonie on before it collapsed.  Then we tried stir sticks (6 taped together) Lastly we tried plastic straws which held 32 Toonies!!!

Language:
Students in grade one:
worked on a special winter writing activity. Students were told to pretend they were trapped in a snow globe! They had to write a 4-5 sentence paragraph about what they would do. Students were reminded to make sure they started with an introduction sentence and a concluding sentence. They needed to make sure they had sentence starters, capitals, periods, and capitals for the word I.

Students in grade two:
worked in their Ontario Writing books on writing an explanation of a recipe. They were told to pick their favourite snack/food and plan out the receipe. Students had to write the title of the recipe, then the materials needed, then the tools needed, and then step by step directions for how to make it.

We also took time today to practice our Christmas concert, please ensure you are practicing speaking loudly and clearly at home. Some students still do not know their part or are whispering it.
