Day 55

A quick reminder: please ensure you are practicing the Christmas concert with your child. The Christmas concert is fast approaching and we need to make sure our parts are memorized and we are saying them slowly, loudly, and clearly.


Important Update:

Parents we have some exciting news!!!!! We would like to thank Carrie-Anne and her family for donating some books to our classroom library! We really appreciate the new books to read.

We would also like to thank Thea's parents for donating 4 Tablets for our classroom!!!! Everyone is so excited to begin using them for our literacy centres!

Students in grade 1 - students completed their time, temperature and money tests. Once they were completed students filled in the journal part in their math books explaining something they have learned this unit.

Unit of inquiry:

We began our new UOI on Structures. Students discussed what a structure was and gave some examples. Students then discussed different materials we use to build with, we thought of some great materials such as; concrete/cement, brick, wood, plastic, metals, fabrics, mortar. Students were then put into three groups. and told they had a store. In their store they only had four shelves to put items on. They were then given pictures of items and told to sort them onto the four shelves based on their materials. Students then labeled the shelves, and glued the pictures on.


Language:

Students worked on their spelling books and then a journal prompt about Christmas.

Unit of inquiry:

We continued to work on our science fair experiment. In order to practice please have ask students to discuss with you what we have been doing!

Language:

grade 1 - students worked on plural nouns. We learned that if a noun ends in "y" and we want to make it plural we must change the 'y' to 'i' and then add 'es.' We then discussed words that would get an 'es' and an 's' when making them plural. Students who did not finish this work sheet brought it home for homework. 


Next we worked on compound words. We learned that some words you can join together to make a new word. We thought of some examples:
such as horse and shoe = horseshoe 
basket and ball = basketball 

We then completed a search and find, where we were given two pictures and we had to put them together to get the words we needed to locate in the search and find. For example we were given a picture of a light and a picture of a house put together that is lighthouse. 

grade 2 - 
Students learned what a diagram is! We discussed how a diagram points out the important parts in an object/picture etc. Students then worked in their Ontario Writing books on the activity of creating a diagram they had to choose between a diagram of:

  • parts of a fish
  • parts of the body
  • parts of a bird 
  •  parts of a flower
Students then used the computer to research of the diagram they chose. Tomorrow they will draw their diagram.

Novel Study 

Today we read some of chapter 11, students volunteered to stand in front of the class and read a page!

Math: 
Students in grade 1 - worked on creating an amount of coins with a set number of coins. Students worked a money package, finding the value in a set of given coins, skip counting a set of coins by 1s, 5s, 10s, 25, finding the higher and lower value of a set of coins. 

Students in grade 2 - worked on making 95 cents and 75 cents using six coins. Students then continued to work on their money packages.

Today we began working on our science fair project. 

Language:
Students in grade one: Practised putting their new learned spelling words into use, they used them to fill in sentences based on their meaning, words that begin with and end with the same sounds, opposites and rhyming.

Students in grade two: Practised  putting their new learned spelling words into use by filling in a crossword with clues, writing a short blurb using some of the words and using the word meanings to fill in the blanks.


Journal: we worked on a winter journal about snow. We also worked on sentence starters as we have been using And to start our sentences. We discussed how and is a compound word that joins two sentences together.

Math: 
Students in grade 1 - worked on picking items to create sandwiches and pizzas. Once they completed building each they had to add up the costs for each item to find out how much their pizza and sandwich cost to purchase.

grade 1 - students worked on common and proper nouns. We made a list of words we know that are common - person, place, thing and a list of proper nouns - start with a capital because they are a specific person, place, or thing like a name of a person, place, day or month etc.  


Then they fixed sentences to capitalize the proper nouns and circled the common nouns. If students did not finish they brought it home to complete. 

grade 2 -
Students continued to  work in their Ontario Writing books on the activity of creating a poster for a toy for sale. Today they began their good copy. 

Novel Study 

We finished our self to text connections by making a list of things about Henry Green and things about ourselves and then how we have some things in common with Henry. Next we read the story A Bad Case of the Stripes and used a Venn  diagram to make a text to text connection about the character Camiloa Cream in the story A Bad Case of the Stripes and Henry Green in the story Chocolate Fever

Students in grade 1 - worked on learning the names, values, and pictures of all Canadian coins. They then used paper money to make 8 and 10 and 5 cents as well as added coins up to find the value of a set of coins. 

Students in grade 2 - Students worked on the loonie and toonie page in their money booklet. They wrote the names, values, and picture for each coin and then worked on different ways to make those values and what items they could buy with that coin.

grade 2 - Students completed their Ontario Writing Assessment where they had to write a persuasive advertisement for a candy they have invented. When that was finished they began to work in their Ontario Writing books on the activity of creating a poster for a toy for sale.

Day 46

School Update:

With the money made from Movie Night Sales SJA was able to purchase two projectors for the school ! Thank you so much for your help!

With the fundraiser of cookie dough and gift cards the school is hoping to raise enough to purchase a PA system for the school. Order forms are due Nov. 20th as a way to ensure all gift cards are sent home before the Christmas holidays to be given as gifts.

Math: 
Students in grade 1 - learned to tell time to the quarter hour. We discussed how you must skip count by five around the clock. We also discovered that this was the five times table for multiplication! This made us very excited. We then practised together as a class showing time to the quarter hour on a digital and analog clock on the board.

Students in grade 2 - began learning about Canadian coins. We began by colouring the coins based on their metallic colour. We then cut out the coins to begin to make a coin booklet.

Math: 
Students in grade 1 - reviewed telling time to the hour and half hour. We reviewed the difference between am/pm and when they occur. We also learned about the words noon and midnight.

Students in grade 2 - learned about temperature and how to read a thermometer. We discussed the seasons and when the weather is warm/cold. We discussed that sometimes during the winter it can get very cold to the point where it goes into the mind digits or negative digits. We also discussed how sometimes in the summer it gets very hot and this is called being in the positive or plus digits. We then took a thermometer and stuck it in a glass of cool water we recorded the temperature. We then boiled water and poured it into a cup. We then stuck the thermometer into the cup and recorded the temperature.

Today we had a Remembrance Day assembly during our UOI time. We wore the poppy we made yesterday and discussed the Importance of Remembrance Day.


Language:

Students in grade one: learned about silent consonants and vowels we read the story Silent Letters Loud and clear. We discussed how silent letters are seen not heard and that you must memorize/practise these words in order to learn their spelling. We then made a list of some words we know with silent letters. Afterwards we put our knowledge into action by completing a worksheet on silent letters.

Math:

We talked about days of the week, months of the year, ordinal numbers of days/numbers in a month. We also talked how to tell if a month has 30 or 31 days. The grade one's also joined us for this lesson to learn the importance of the calendar as well.

Today we discussed our summative assessment for the end of this unit. Students were to have their topic today as per the outline. The students who came with their ideas had them approved and will begin working on it tomorrow. Students who did not have their topic must have them by tomorrow. Please feel free to begin brainstorming tonight with your child about their product and send the ideas in tomorrow!

Today we continued our media booklet. We looked at a product advertisement. We looked at a box of cheeze -its  and decided what the advertisement was about, the intent of the commercial and the purpose of it, we also discussed the different techniques used on the product.

Students in grade 1 -
reviewed telling time to the hour and half hour. Students used their clocks to show me different times. We reviewed how the minute hand is always at the twelve when we are telling time to the hour. Students then worked on reading analog and digital times, and putting them on clocks.

Students in grade 2 - practised telling time by quarter hour and minutes. Students reviewed using their clocks they made and then completed work in their math makes sense books.

Today we began a media booklet. We looked at a tv commercial and decided what the commercial was about, the intent of he commercial and the purpose of it. 

Language:
Students in grade one: wrote their Ontario Writing assessment. They were required to write a list of recess rules. We have been learning about list writing over the last few weeks and students were reminded to use:
numbers, bullets, or hyphens
have a title
use a capital
use a period
and give 6 rules.
Students then drew a picture of them playing at recess

Students in grade two: continued working on their graphic organizer, they are designing their own donut. They also drew a picture of their donut. We brainstormed different words we can use for our advertisement about the donut. They have to choose the product's name. Catchy phrases to gain the reader/listener's attention. They have to describe the size, colour, taste of the donut. Students will be working on this for a few days.

Unit of inquiry:
 Today we reviewed what the three main focuses of media are 1) to inform the audience 2) to persuade/convince the audience 3) to entertain the audience. We also reviewed fact vs. opinion definitions. We also reviewed what point of view is. Today students learned about gimmicks and how advertisements use them to persuade us to buy their product. We played a game on the Internet making an ad for cereal boxes using different gimmicks. Language:
Students in grade one: reviewed asking and telling sentences. Students reviewed proper punctuation for asking (question mark) sentences and telling sentences (period or exclamation mark). Students were given a package where they read sentences and put the proper punctuation at the end. They also learned about how the word I is a proper noun. They then corrected sentences that had the word I used in correctly in the sentence. Students who did not finish this package brought it home for homework.
