The Calendar: the special helper puts up the date, adds to our weather graph, and counts days at school.

French: http://mllehousja.blogspot.com

Math:
As a class we continued to work on solving word problems using subtraction and addition.
Students were given the problem; There are nine people on a train at the next stop four more get on, how many people are on the train. Students couldn't simply just give the answer but had to work on giving a addition sentence. Ex  9 + 4 = 13 students then had to also show their work of how they got this answer (by drawing objects). Once this was solved students were then told at the next stop two people get off the train.
Students in grade 1 -

Students in grade 2 - practised solving word equations pertaining to addition and subtraction.

Unit of inquiry:
Today students worked on their summative assessment - plotting their country on the map and the weather in their country and clothing.

Language:
As a class we practised adding detail to sentences. We did a couple  as a class; students first had to find and label the noun and verb in the sentence. Then they had to add at least one adjective to describe the noun. Then they needed to pick who, what, where, when, why to add to the sentence, and then repeat. For example:

The pumpkin grew. noun pumpkin, verb grew.

The orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb).

The orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb) in the field. (where)

In the fall (when) the orange (adjective) pumpkin(noun) grew(verb) in the field. (where)

We also completed our spelling tests. Everyone did such a great job!

Students are asked to complete only the outline portion of their country's flag at home. Please ensure that the flag is the size of a piece of paper (8.5x11) and drawn on white paper, as students will be colouring it in class. The flag outline is due back to school by Tuesday October 13th as that is when we will be colouring it.

Students in class have been working on picking a name, plotting their country on a world map, the weather and clothing in their country. They have rough copy booklets that they are working on. They are asked to read the topic at the top of the page and write 3-4 sentences for each topic. This booklet will be sent home over the weekend. Along with completing their flag outline I ask if you could please help them finish the weather and clothing portion of the rough copy booklet.

The topic pages are as follows:
Explain the weather in your country, what is it like?
Explain what factors affect the weather in your country (i.e. geographic location is it close to the equator?)
Explain how the weather is similar/different to Canada

Explain what clothing you would wear in your country?
Explain what factors affect the clothing in your country (weather/geographic location)
Explain How the clothing is different from/Similar to what your wear in Canada.

Please keep in mind that most of these pages have been started/completed and you are not working from scratch! I appreciate your help and all that you do!

A world map will be sent home for students to plot their country.
